These tiny flying robots developed at Harvard university are able of controlled flight. The power and control technology has not been developed to be so small yet so therefore meaning that it has to have a wire connected to it during flight.
RoboBee’s wings are 3 cm long which is the smallest man made wing span that has ever achieved flight. The wings can beat 120 times a second and the two are independently controlled so that the mini-robot can make controlled manoeuvres. The whole mechanism is made out of flat sheets of aluminium metal and folded and glued to make the robot. All this technology is packed into 0.08 g.
Harvard’s vision is for these robots to be able to artificially pollinate plants, implement military surveillance, to help search and rescue efforts, to aid weather predicting and to monitor traffic.
The RoboBee is a huge break though in hyper-micro robotic technology and with the aim of making these tiny creatures able to think for themselves and to develop colonizing natural bee like instincts it will continue to smash through barriers of what is know about robotics.
The wing muscles are an amazing design and work by contracting when a small magnetic field is applied. A few years ago we would of had to use a rotation of a wheel but this could have not been a useful solution in the RoboBee’s design as it would have been to big to fit with the bots frame and would take to much power to make it efficient.
I think that this is a great break though in robot technology and physical science. I can’t wait for the future.

This wonderful spacecraft launched the Hubble telescope and delivered many parts of the I.S.S to low earth orbit, it has also ferried many astronauts to their missions on the station as well. It docked with Mir, the now abandoned Russian space station, not only improving relations between the U.S and Russia but making it easier for humans to develop in space.
It has capability to deliver 24,400 kg to low earth orbit. It surpasses not only the capabilities of the space craft of it’s time but all modern space craft and is semi reusable. But with the Falcon Heavy on the horizon that will go even beyond the capabilities of the space shuttle, the shuttle’s era has ended. There has been 5 shuttles unfortunately 2 have been lost to accidents but even this doesn’t damage the shuttles amazing achievements. First launched in 1981 the shuttle was getting old and so had to be halted.

This question will either directly effect you, your kids or someone you know. We have a few options and if we act now we have a good amount of time to build and change our energy future. We could invest in green energy’s such as wind, wave, solar or biomass. We could build more nuclear power plants like the French have. Or we could build polluting power generation methods such as coal and oil.
Obviously, the problem with polluting power generation is that in our future they will cause many problems for our environment. These problems range from the CO2 released from them will heat up our atmosphere and melt the ice caps rising the sea level to a rise in extreme weather and heath issues for air breathing organisms such as humans. So, unfortunately, we do not have the option to build these polluting power plants. This leaves us with two options nuclear power or green energy.
Nuclear power is a hot topic with many green activists as if not managed properly or a rare accident happens it can contaminate an area for just under a century. Nuclear power is very safe and doesn’t directly pollute our world. The only annoyance that nuclear power leaves us with is it’s nuclear waste. The radio active material is dangerous to humans but can be dealt with by storing it deep underground. The positives of nuclear power is that it can produce a lot of power with minimal pollution and is cheaper than green technologies. Nuclear power is defiantly a possibility for massive power generation of the future and with the hope of fusion technology on the horizon the amount of power one station can produce could increase dramatically.
The promise of non-polluting power generation has become real over the last 10 years. With the development of affordable mass power generation governments have invested in huge wind farms, solar grants, hydroelectric power, geothermal power and wave power generation. These types of generation are very useful but unfortunately are very expensive and depend on the natural environment that we cannot control. Where as nuclear power or polluting generation that we can control will make sure that no energy is wasted. I think that hydroelectric power generation really has a future in our world. As the top four power generation body’s are currently hydro electric dams, I think this could not only make power generation cheaper but it could also make it completely clean. Hydroelectricity only has one draw back and that is that large parts of land have to be flooded to build up a feeder lake for the dam. I love green energies as we can create electricity by using freely available resources which means that we do not pollute our unstable climate that needs protecting.
I believe that for our energy future to successfully meet both our needs as humans and our fragile climate needs we need to combine nuclear energy and green energy. As already in the U.K we have 9 nuclear power plants if we invest in more plants I think we can hand over 50 per cent of our power generation to nuclear power plants and the rest to completely green energies. I think that with advances in both of these sectors this will soon be a possible plan to both bring electricity prices down as well as making sure that our balanced climate is not pushed off a cliff.

Today, I took the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Junior Maths Challenge. I obviously can’t talk about any of the questions or otherwise it might give those taking the exam tomorrow an unfair advantage.
I go to King Alfred School which is a school that believes in letting the student participate in their own education. They will not force us into anything and try to encourage us to love learning not to hate it. We do not wear uniform and call our teachers by their first name. The atmosphere is friendly and really has kindled at least my imagination. To learn more about my great school follow the link.
I love this sort of maths and worked hard to prepare as well as working after school with two of our maths teachers. I went in to the exam after a day of anticipation and really had a positive outlook to it.
I love maths and today I think I did well.
Maths though is everything. It explains everything in physics and physicists explain every other science which again explain everything else. A maths degree could get you most jobs and would inspire you to invent anything. You can change the world with every interest you have.
But maths is awesome. Okay some people hate maths but that is okay.
